This finely detailed mid-nineteenth-century map illustrates Northern India during the period of British East India Company control. Published in John Tallis's famous Illustrated Atlas (1851), the map features fine hand-colored outlines denoting territories divided by political status: British Possessions (pink/red), States under British Protection (yellow), and Independent States (green). Regions depicted span from the Indus and Punjab in the west across the Ganges Plain to Bengal, Assam, and the borders of Tibet and Burma. The map is renowned for its elaborate decorative scrollwork border and finely executed steel-engraved vignettes. At the top center, a decorative emblem features the Seal of the East India Company alongside views of the 'Car of Juggernaut' and 'The British Residency, Hyderabad.' The bottom margin displays vignettes depicting a 'Tiger Hunt', 'Hindoos', and the 'Ruins, Old Delhi', all drawn by A. H. Wray and engraved by J. H. Kernot. John Tallis was one of the last major commercial publishers to produce decorative atlases featuring steel-engraved vignettes. This map serves as an exceptional historical record of British cartography in South Asia prior to the Indian Rebellion of 1857 and the establishment of the direct British Raj.
