This attractive mid-nineteenth-century map of Ceylon (modern-day Sri Lanka) was drawn and engraved by John Rapkin with illustrations by Henry Winkles for publication by The London Printing and Publishing Company. The map depicts the island's coastal provinces, internal topography, mountain ranges, rivers, and principal settlements in fine detail, outlined with original hand-applied color highlighting administrative boundaries. The map is framed by a signature Victorian decorative scrollwork border that characterizes the popular Tallis and London Printing & Publishing map series. Surrounding the cartographic layout are five finely etched vignette views showcasing notable geographic landmarks, cultural monuments, and cities across the island. These scenes include the 'Ruins of a Dagoba at Toopharamaya', the 'Temple of Buddha Kalany', the serene 'Lake of Kandy', 'Adam's Peak from the Lake of Colombo', and a coastal view of 'Colombo'. These artistic vignettes reflect the Victorian public's growing fascination with orientalist architecture, imperial topographies, and ancient Asian archaeological sites.
