This finely detailed mid-nineteenth-century map of Ceylon (modern-day Sri Lanka) was published by John Tallis & Company for The Illustrated Atlas, And Modern History of the World. Engraved by J. Rapkin with vignettes drawn and engraved by Henry Winkles, the map is framed by Tallis's signature ornate decorative scrollwork border. The island is depicted with detailed provincial boundaries, topographical relief, major roads, and coastal settlements ranging from Jaffna in the north to Galle and Matara in the south. Surrounding the central map are five charming vignette illustrations capturing key landscape and cultural highlights of the island. These include scenic views of the Lake of Kandy and Adam's Peak, alongside architectural depictions of the Ruins of a Dagoba at Toopharamaya, the Temple of Buddha Kalany, and a coastal vista of Colombo. These steel-engraved vignettes offer rich artistic context alongside cartographic accuracy, making this one of the most desirable 19th-century decorative maps of Sri Lanka.
