This detailed 1855 mid-nineteenth-century map depicts the southern regions of France alongside northern border areas of Spain, stretching from the Bay of Biscay across the Pyrenees to the Mediterranean coastline. Published in Gotha by Justus Perthes as part of the renowned Stieler's Hand-Atlas, the sheet was drawn by Friedrich von Stülpnagel based on geographical data by Adolf Stieler. The topography is rendered with fine hachuring, capturing the rugged mountain passes of the Pyrenees, the Massif Central, and the Maritime Alps with exceptional precision. In addition to natural geographical features, the map delineates regional boundaries, major urban centers, river networks, and early railway routes active or projected during the mid-1850s. An elegant oval title cartouche occupies the lower right quadrant over the Mediterranean Sea, accompanied by graphic distance scales and revision notes.
