This detailed mid-19th-century regional map depicts the Austrian Empire (Der Oesterreichische Kaiser-Staat) at its territorial height in 1852, prior to the loss of Lombardy and Venetia. Designed and drawn by cartographer Friedrich von Stülpnagel, the map was published in Gotha by the renowned cartographic firm Justus Perthes as Plate No. 26 in Stieler's Hand-Atlas. The sheet displays the intricate administrative divisions of the Habsburg realm, stretching from Northern Italy (Lombardy-Venetia) and Bohemia in the west to Galicia, Transylvania, and the Kingdom of Hungary in the east, as well as the Adriatic coastline along Dalmatia. Fine hand-tinted borders distinctly outline the various internal kingdoms, principalities, and crown lands. A notable feature of this plate is the detailed inset map in the lower right corner showing the city of Vienna ('WIEN im Maassstabe von 75000') along with an extensive alphanumeric key identifying historical public buildings, palaces, and urban landmarks.
